Geneva. – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) released a new report called: “Bled dry: How war in the Middle East is bringing the region to the brink of a water catastrophe” on Wednesday.
The Middle East’s water supplies – and the people who depend on them – are at breaking point. We detail the inter-related network of problems behind this long overlooked crisis, and what can be done about them.
The report highlights a very disturbing trend the ICRC has observed in which warring parties are intentionally targeting water and electrical services or are using them as tactical weapons to weaken opponents or strengthen their hand in negotiations. As a result, millions of people are left without water. The report covers Syria, Iraq, Israel and Occupied Palestinian Territories, Lebanon, Jordan, and Yemen.
