Gender Equality: Three Latin American Countries Reach Gender Parity In Parliaments

Santiago de Chile. – Bolivia, Cuba and Ecuador are within the top ten places in the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s (IPU) world ranking of women’s presence in national parliaments, in second, fourth and ninth places respectively. The whole region reached the 27.5% of female participation in parliaments.

Bolivia, in particular, jumped from a 25% of women in parliamentary seats to a representation of 53% after the national elections of 2014. These are the first elections since they implemented the law of gender parity and alternation.
