Berlin (epo.de). - In 33 Ländern weltweit herrscht eine "sehr ernste" oder "gravierende" Hungersituation. Diese Länder bilden die Schlusslichter im Welthunger-Index 2008 (WHI 08), den das Forschungsinstitut für Ernährungspolitik (IFPRI) aus Washington und die Welthungerhilfe anlässlich des Welternährungstages am 16. Oktober am Dienstag in Berlin vorstellten. Die Demokratische Republik Kongo, Eritrea, Burundi, Niger und Sierra Leone schneiden am schlechtesten von insgesamt 88 Ländern in dem Ranking ab. Dort ist die Situation "teils sehr gravierend". Nach Weltregionen gruppiert, steht Afrika südlich der Sahara am schlechtesten da, gefolgt von Südasien. Insgesamt ist die Zahl der Hungernden weltweit von 848 auf 923 Millionen Menschen gestiegen.

New York (UN/epo). - The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) will co-sponsor the second annual global walk against child hunger, with participants in over 90 countries across 24 time zones raising money to help fund school feeding projects worldwide.
Rome (FAO/epo). - The Council, the executive governing body of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), yesterday evening adopted Voluntary Guidelines that would "support the progressive realization of the right to adequate food in the context of national food security." The adoption of the Right to Food Guidelines comes two months to the day after the FAO Committee on World Food Security endorsed them following some 20 months of often difficult, but constructive negotiations.
Stuttgart (epo). - Die evangelische Hilfsaktion "Brot für die Welt" hat sich erfreut über die Freiwilligen Leitlinien der Ernährungs- und Landwirtschaftsorganisation der Vereinten Nationen (FAO) zum Menschenrecht auf Nahrung gezeigt. Die Leitlinien werden am heutigen vom Rat der FAO in Rom verabschiedet. "Sie sind ein Sieg für die Zivilgesellschaft weltweit", erklärte die Direktorin von "Brot für die Welt", Cornelia Füllkrug-Weitzel.
